A Special Tribute to Al Zerries
Posted by sarah

The staff of Watercolor Artist is shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the sudden passing of artist Al Zerries, whose work has appeared often in our pages. To celebrate his life and his life's work, we offer this slide show of his portraits in watercolor, pastel and oil.

A few years ago, I contacted Al specifically to tell him how much I enjoyed looking at his beautiful figurative watercolor paintings. He told me that he also has always liked the way I worked with watercolor and pastel. Over the last few years, we became email buddies and shared our ideas and comments concerning art and things in general. As it turned out, we had a lot in common and would talk at least several times a week.

As I quickly learned, Al had a great sense of humor so we started to joke around with each other at every opportunity, especially with our taste in music - he liked Bluegrass and I liked Rock. He would always say that "he did always like Eric Clapton though, so I shouldn't tease him that much."

More times than all of us fine artists would like to see, the wrong artist will win the Gold Metal Award in a particular art show. Whenever he or I would win any award in any of the shows we both entered, he would always jokingly say, "Score one for the good guys." In this country of prominent fine artists working today, Al was truly one of those good guys. I considered him to be one of the best.

With his passing, I lost one of my best friends and confidants. I will always remember him in my thoughts for the rest of my life.

His email buddy,
Bill James
